Cedar Point To Potentially Eliminate Souvenir Drink Bottles
When you think of theme parks, you probably think of summer family fun, but for those who purchased an All-Season Souvenir Drink Bottle, they may be a target for thieves.
In the past, Cedar Fair parks (parent company of Cedar Point, Kings Island, Carowinds and more) have offered Souvenir drink bottles that included free refills on the day you purchase the bottle then, .99 cent refills for the remainder of the season during each visit (green). For the 2016 season, Cedar Fair took a new approach and introduced All Season Drink bottles (orange). Guests could purchase an orange bottle for one low price in order to receive free drinks at any Cedar Fair park you visited in 2016. It was a great idea… but there were many downfalls for guests. At some rides guests had to pay for a locker to store the bottle before entering the queue line. Then, there was the hassle of lugging it around all day and risk forgetting it somewhere once setting it down. Or even worse, returning to a park without it all together.
During the inaugural season of the all season drink bottles, one major problem arose. News stations started reporting that the drink bottles were being stolen from those that purchased them. Instead of purchasing lockers, guests would hide their drink bottles and expect to see them as they come back from the ride. Some guests weren’t so lucky and arrived back to nothing.
When brought to the attention of Cedar Point in Sandusky Ohio, a spokesperson said “We encourage the use of lockers located at various locations inside the park to store loose articles such as souvenir drink bottles.” Super fans and coaster enthusiasts found this to be unacceptable and kept writing to Cedar Fair corporate pushing for a solution.
Today, Cedar Fair sent out surveys to pass holders of their parks asking fans about various topics. Below is a question from the Cedar Point survey pertaining a potentially new drink program.
This new idea would eliminate the plastic bottle all together. It would only require your season pass, which is nice since it’s the same concept of how the All Season Dining Plan works. The park employee would scan your pass and you would receive a disposable cup with the drink of your choice (hopefully with a lid). The price would be around the same price as last years souvenir bottles and would include the same wait time (5-15 minutes) in between drinks. It also seems that there may even be an option allowing guests choose between getting the souvenir bottle or just scanning your pass. There has been many times when we find ourselves getting half way to a park and realizing we forgot our drink bottles at home. This would definitely fix that issue and also solve the issue of having to carry the giant bottles around the park all day.
Cedar Fair recently solved the issue of carrying around printed photos all day by offering the a FunPix option. With FunPix, guests can get unlimited digital photos for a single visit with a Single Day FunPix Photo Pass, or all season with the All Season FunPix Photo Pass!
Could this lead to the introduction of RFID style wrist bands at Cedar Fair parks? Only time will tell! How do you feel about eliminating the souvenir drink bottles?
