Rumor Mill: New Mack Coaster Coming To Carowinds
Previously, we reported that Carowinds would be receiving a new coaster for the 2019 season. While the initial surveying on the site seemed to indicate that Carowinds would be the recipient of a wood coaster, recent developments cast doubt to our original predictions.
Recently, a staging area for shipped parts was constructed in the parking lot near the Afterburn coaster. A few weeks ago, anchor bolts and molds for column footings were observed on site. Then, last week, a reader of our site sent us a photo from the same staging area, but this time with a crate labeled “spare parts for column” along with the unmistakable Mack logo on the side.

This clearly confirms that the new coaster (being referred to as “Project Alpha”) will be from Mack Rides.
In regards to what type of coaster the new ride may be, it is very likely that given the current collection of rides the park has, it will be a multi-launch coaster much like Icon at Blackpool or Blue Fire at Europa-Park.
The park has kept very quiet regarding the 2019 project. They have even deactivated the webcam that was previously focused on the construction site.
Furthermore, recent trademark filings by Cedar Fair may have offered us a potential name for the new coaster. On April 9th of this year, Cedar Fair filed a trademark for the phrase “Copperhead Strike”. For those who are unaware, a Copperhead is a type of snake commonly found in the Carolinas. Ironically, if the new ride is named Copperhead Strike, it would be located directly across from the Flying Cobras ride.
According to the progress and stage of construction, this looks to be a 2019 debut – which would make it the second Mack roller coaster at Carowinds, after Ricochet.
Although we have made some very educated guesses with strong evidence, this is still just that, a guess. Until Carowinds officially announces a new attraction, take it with a grain of salt..
How do you feel about this possible new attraction? We would love to hear your thoughts — let us know on our socials! For tickets and more information, visit the official Carowinds website by clicking here.
