Kennywood Reveals All New Steelers Country Land With NEW Roller Coaster
Rumors have been swirling about a new roller coaster coming to Kennywood since the removal of the Log Jammer last off-season.
Today, July 19th, eager fans, enthusiasts, and thrill seekers, have finally learned that Kennywood’s “Project 412” is not only a new ride, but an entirely new land. During a press conference lead by Nick Paradise, Kennywood’s Director of PR, revealed that an all new “Steelers Country” area themed around Pittsburgh’s NFL Football teamwould be coming to the park in 2019!
Kennywood Park and the Pittsburgh Steelers have teamed up to for a historic collaboration for the parks 120th year celebration. In 2019, Steelers Country will be a one-of-a-kind themed land that celebrates the hard-hitting heroics of the football players, but with a unique twist. The park experience turns its attention to the fans, putting them at the center of the action! Exclusive merchandise, skill games, and food locations – including a unique tailgating experience – create the feeling of being at the stadium.
The new Steelers Country will be anchored by a custom record-breaking roller coaster from S&S called “The Steel Curtain”. With Steelers Country, Kennywood and the Steelers are honoring the greatness of the past and looking toward the future of the park, the team, the fans, and the city of Pittsburgh.
The new Steel Curtain roller coaster was hyped through the creative use of creative puzzles such as a lottery scratch off and word search.
Ever since the closure of the parks famed Log Jammer water ride in 2017, there was much speculation of a new coaster on the plot of land. When the park opened for the 2018 season, it seemed that a new coaster was indeed on the horizon as footers began to be installed in the parks lagoon area. Here’s a video showing the footer construction just over a month ago.
Kennywood was able to prevent any huge leaks before the announcement, which is an epic achievement for modern day parks. The park kept enthusiasts on their feet through tricks and red herrings. Prior to the announcement, there was no clear consensus on the type of coaster or what the new coaster would be like.
At a maximum height of 220 feet, the colossal steel structure of the new Steel Curtain roller coaster will serve as a landmark addition to the park and a high-energy entry point welcoming guests to Steelers Country.
During the two-minute adrenaline rush, riders will speed through 4,000 feet of track at 75 miles per hour while navigating 9 inversions – including the world’s tallest at 197 feet above the ground!
Designed by S&S Sansei Technologies, The Steel Curtain will set three new records: a Pennsylvania state record (tallest roller coaster), a North American record (most inversions “9”), and a world record (tallest inversion “197ft”). Plus, the company is introducing a new feature they have dubbed a “Banana Roll”!
The image below shows where the new coaster will travel over top of the midway between the Racer and the lagoon. This will create some spectacular views!

Also in the new land is “The Steelers Experience”, a one-of-a-kind indoor, multi-level training facility that puts you on the field and in the center of the action! Interactive exhibits like the cooperative Terrible Tower and competitive 2-Minute Drill will get your team game day ready! Track your progress and see how you stack up against others with an interactive leader board.
And of course new Steelers themed midway games will be added giving fans an opportunity to try their hand (or foot) at a number of challenging games. Testing strength and endurance, these Midway Games will be as much fun to watch as they are to play!
“Being the first park to collaborate with a professional sports franchise on not only a themed area, but also a pulse-pounding, high-flying roller coaster is a great honor that fits in with Kennywood’s longstanding tradition of innovation,” said Kennywood General Manager Jerome Gibas. “For that franchise to be our hometown Steelers, the most successful team in America’s most popular sport, it’s a sure touchdown!”
The Steelers organization is very pleased to be partnered as well. Steelers Vice President of Sales and Marketing Ryan Huzjak said:
“We are very excited about the partnership with Kennywood. Being able to connect the Pittsburgh Steelers with a family attraction like Kennywood is a natural fit for both organizations, and we are thrilled about the tradition and longstanding history the Steelers and Kennywood provide to families in and around the city of Pittsburgh.
The new land eplaces the former Log Jammer area and surrounding. Below is an overview map to better understand where all this will fit in.
Ground has already been broken on the Steel Curtain coaster, with the first pieces of track to arrive at Kennywood later this month.
Crews will be hard at work to open Steelers Country, highlighted by this record-setting roller coaster, during the 2019 season.

WAIT THERE’S MORE! Next, Kennywood will debut Thomas Town, a new family area in addition to the already iconic kids area. This is the largest single year attraction in the parks history. We took a closer look at the progress inside this new area.
The all new Thomas Town is scheduled to open next week. More on that addition can be found by clicking here.
