Power Outage Shuts Down Six Flags Great Adventure – Jackson, NJ
Freak things happen to all of us, even theme parks… Yesterday a power outage at Six Flags Great Adventure temporarily shut down all the park’s rides. Some rides still had guests on them leaving many customers upset and asking for refunds.
Great Adventure spokesperson Kaitlyn Turi said a power outage occurred at 1:30 p.m. and all park guests on affected rides at the time of the outage “were safely unloaded within 20 minutes.” “Some areas of the park were affected, however all rides were closed as a precautionary measure,”
The power outage was caused by a faulty transformer. New Jersey Central Power & Light Co. employees worked on the scene until resolving the problem around 5:30pm.
Turi said all rides at the park are designed with advanced computer systems that provide safe locations for rides to stop. Ride operators are trained to help guests safely disembark in such situations.
Twitter immediately blew up with guests talking about their experiences in the park.
Kelly Scafidi said her family, which included four children and three adults, were only able to go on one ride, the parachute drop, before the power went out. She said they waited 2 1/2 hours in line to get on that ride. She continued that her family has season passes to Great Adventure but by 4:30 p.m., they were ready to leave.
“Everybody is tired,” Scafidi said. “There are only a few rides on and everybody is trying to get on them. You can’t get anything to drink. All the concession stands are closed.”
Sarah Levtov, of Bronx, said she was there as a guest with a group of 18 people from NYC, including 11 children from 6 to 14 years old. Levtov said “We were actually in the park when the power outage happened,” She continued that some in the group had gone on one ride, while others had not yet gone on any rides when the power went out. After waiting for 2 1/2 hours to see if power would be fully restored, the disappointed group decided to head back home.
Levtov said “We will probably not come back here,”. “We are completely devastated. What a horrible experience to come here all the way from Riverdale and have this happen.”
New Jersey Central Power & Light spokesperson Maria Sessa said a crew has successfully replaced the blown out transformer. Power was restored to part of the park shortly after but it’s still unknown if any rides were affected by the outage.
