Six Flags Sidewinder Safari Coaster Update
At the start of 2020, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom was actively promoting a new Sidewinder Safari coaster on their website.
Then, after the COVID-19 pandemic was happening in April of 2020, the coaster and all marketing for it was suddenly removed from the Six Flags website and the app with access being restricted.

As of today, (2/27/2021) the status of the safari coaster is still currently unknown after the park publicly released their plans for the 2021 season:
Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, the Thrill Capital of Northern California, is currently open weekends with a walk-through event, The Marine World Experience, now featuring the return of the park’s favorite walruses, Uquq and Pakak. Renaissance Days is an all-new special event that transports guests back to the Renaissance Era through wondrous characters, colorful costumes, delicious hearty foods, period shops, and fanciful décor. In April, the park will help guests celebrate Spring Break with all-new activities and fun photo opportunities. The park is preparing to transition to full operation with its complement of thrilling roller coasters, rides, and attractions in accordance with the California Blueprint for a Safer Economy.
The ride was originally described to be a highly themed and immersive attraction. Before boarding Sidewinder Safari, guests were to enter a safari-themed queue line. With snakes, lizards and other reptiles surrounding them, guests would board spinning coaster vehicles for an exhilarating experience families and teens alike would enjoy.
Other Sidewinder Safari highlights included:
- Multiple 360 degree sideway spins;
- Rapid-strike drops;
- Twisting and turning hairpin curves;
- Cars that allow four people to enjoy the fun together.
The move could be part of Six Flags’ plans on eliminating $40-50 million spent on discretionary capital projects, as a way of enhancing liquidity. It may even be possible the ride is being held for the 2022 season, as the operating status of theme parks in California is still up in the air. At the current time, there are no references to the attraction on the Discovery Kingdom or cooperate site.
