New Mako Dive Coaster Coming To SeaWorld San Diego
It seems SeaWorld San Diego is on a massive expansion project. In 2018 the park opened Electric Eel, a unique coaster manufactured by Premier Rides. In 2019, the park will debut Tidal Twister, a Skyline Attractions Skywarp. Furthermore, in 2020 the park has planned their largest investment yet for its 55th anniversary! Enter MAKO!
Manufactured by Bolliger & Mabillard (B&M), based in Switzerland., Mako will be a dive coaster (similar to Sheikra at Busch Gardens Tampa) constructed adjacent to Journey to Atlantis in the southeast corner of the park in an area that is currently a parking lot. The new ride will share the same name as the coaster at SeaWorld Orlando.
Climbing to 153 feet with their feet dangling in the air, riders will be suspended on a 45-degree angle at the crown of the ride before plunging down a 143-foot facedown vertical drop accelerating to more than 60 miles per hour! Riders will also experience multiple inversions, a barrel roll, an Immelmann loop, a hammerhead turn and even a flat spin as they race along the nearly 2,500 feet of track.
Each of the floorless ride cars will hold 18 riders in three, six-person rows. We used the blueprint from the coaster and made a mock up of the ride showing on and off ride video as well as a POV. Enjoy!
The animal-conservation element of the new attraction will focus on shark awareness and conservation, and will include a partnership with a shark conservation organization. To give guests a more immersive experience, the parks Shark Encounter attraction will also be renovated. The enhancements for the exhibit will give guests not only a more immersive experience, but will allow the park to focus on research and conservation efforts of endangered sharks.
That’s not all! In 2020, a new entrance plaza will also be built for the 55th anniversary of the iconic park. This will allow for a quicker entry into the park.
While it’s great to see new thrill rides going in at the parks, Seaworld is really about saving the animals! SeaWorld is one of the world’s foremost zoological organizations and a global leader in animal welfare, behavioral training, husbandry and veterinary care. The company collectively cares for what it believes is one of the largest zoological collections in the world and has helped lead advances in the care of animals. The company also rescues and rehabilitates marine and terrestrial animals that are ill, injured, orphaned or abandoned, with the goal of returning them to the wild. The SeaWorld rescue team has helped more than 33,000 animals in need over the last 50 years.
