SeaWorld Begins Construction On New Dive Coaster
Construction on SeaWorld San Diego’s new attraction for 2020 — the tallest, fastest and longest dive coaster in California — kicked off in conjunction with National Roller Coaster Day. The initial phase of construction consists of preparing the site for the installation of the ride’s foundation and utilities. The dive coaster, to be located adjacent to Journey to Atlantis in the southeast corner of the park, is scheduled to open for summer 2020.
Along with being the tallest, fastest and longest dive coaster in California, this new attraction will be the only floorless dive coaster in the state. The ride, being built by Switzerland-based Bollinger & Mabillard, will climb to 153 feet. Riders, with their feet dangling in the air, will be suspended on a 45-degree angle at the crown of the ride before plunging down a 143-foot facedown vertical drop accelerating to more than 60 miles per hour. During the two-minute ride, visitors will also experience heart-pounding inversions, a barrel roll and Immelmann loop, a hammerhead turn and a flat spin as they race along the nearly 2,500 feet of track. Each of the floorless ride cars will hold 18 riders in three, six-person rows.
We used the blueprint from the coaster and made a mock up of the ride showing on and off ride video as well as a POV. Enjoy!
The animal-conservation element of the new attraction will focus on shark awareness and conservation, and will include a partnership with a shark conservation organization. To give guests a more immersive experience, the parks Shark Encounter attraction will also be renovated. The enhancements for the exhibit will give guests not only a more immersive experience, but will allow the park to focus on research and conservation efforts of endangered sharks.
That’s not all! In 2020, a new entrance plaza will also be built for the 55th anniversary of the iconic park. This will allow for a quicker entry into the park.
While it’s great to see new thrill rides going in at the parks, Seaworld is really about saving the animals! SeaWorld is one of the world’s foremost zoological organizations and a global leader in animal welfare, behavioral training, husbandry and veterinary care. The company collectively cares for what it believes is one of the largest zoological collections in the world and has helped lead advances in the care of animals. The company also rescues and rehabilitates marine and terrestrial animals that are ill, injured, orphaned or abandoned, with the goal of returning them to the wild. The SeaWorld rescue team has helped more than 33,000 animals in need over the last 50 years.
