Schlitterbahn Building World’s Tallest Water Coaster!
Something MASSIVE is being constructed at Schlitterbahn Galveston Island this summer!
First it was the longest river ride, then the longest action river ride, then the tallest waterslide. Now, Schlitterbahn is building the WORLD’S TALLEST WATER COASTER and putting it in the award-winning Schlitterbahn Waterpark on Galveston Island!
The new water coaster is named MASSIV, the German word for massive and will be ready just in time for the waterpark’s 10th Anniversary celebration this summer. Schlitterbahn Galveston Island is home to more thrill rides than any other Schlitterbahn Waterpark, making it the perfect home for this record-breaking ride.
MASSIV is going to be the biggest of it’s kind and will use the patented Master Blaster technology that is used in the slides blasters to help riders go uphill. One to two riders will be able to share the experience in a double tube as they go through a never-before-done triple-drop which will end in a landing pool. Those brave enough to climb 123-step staircase will embark on an adventure they won’t soon forget. MASSIV is made up of 135 slide segments, including seven transparent tubes that make you feel like you’re floating on air. And THAT is what makes MASSIV so special!
The MASSIV coaster will be a shared experience ride, which gives it much wider appeal. People who would never ride something this big, will ride with a friend or family member. But it may be too massive for some folks.
If you’re still wondering what a water coaster is, and how it differs from a normal tube slide, let’s dive in! A water coaster is a water ride that has multiple uphill sections, uses a ride vehicle (boat, tube, or raft), and has other ride elements (spirals, fish ladders, water screens, etc.) to deliver a thrilling and fun filled ride. The graphic below better describes the different types of water slides.
So what will the ride layout look like? See the blueprint below..
What’s the ride itself going to look like?
Sticking to tradition with Schlitterbahns record-breaking attractions, MASSIV will be green, white and red with translucent sections. (Yes, you read that right, it’s going to have 7 green translucent segments so you can get a glance of the park as you move through the ride!) Here’s a sneak peek of one of the slide pieces getting ready to be shipped.
How long is it going to be and where exactly is it going?
The ride is two and a half football fields long (approximately 926 feet), making it twice the length of any other waterslide at Schlitterbahn Galveston Island.
In case your’re wondering, there’s no elevator and no conveyor. Riders will carry a tube to the top of the 123 stairs.
If you decided that you didn’t want to ride MASSIV, you will have to walk back down and complete a walk of 246 steps!
MASSIV will need 203 fiberglass parts… and they are already on site!
Even the steel is on site!
The coaster will also feature numerous other innovations, like the triple-drop, which lands the rider in a pool after being blasted with six jets. They wont give away the exact height until late Spring to keep others from trying to get ahead of them. The only figure they have given us so far is that it will be 926 feet long, twice the length of the current longest slide in the park. Construction is moving along quite fast and as long as everything keeps going as planned, we should see this baby testing before too long!
Hopefully they follow suit with the reservation system that they used when Verruckt opened to insanely long lines.
