New Metal Detectors Installed at Disney Universal and SeaWorld Parks.
This past week, the big Orlando area parks (Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando, and SeaWorld Orlando) are utilizing metal detectors that all guests must pass through before entering the parks.
The walk-through metal detectors installed at Disney are similar to the ones that Kennywood, Six Flags, and Cedar Fair parks have been using for the past several years. A Disney spokesperson said security measures, both visible and non-visible, have been added in recent weeks, including additional law enforcement and specially trained patrol dogs. Universal Orlando began using wand style metal detectors closer to their garages in an area leading into its parks and City Walk. SeaWorld Orlando is now using wand-style detectors at their entrance as well.
With so many terrorist attacks over the past few years, the addition of metal detectors is definitely a step in the right direction to better the safety of guests. However, coaster fans are still not happy about the additional metal detectors at the beginning of popular ride queues at Universal Orlando. This past summer, walk-through style detectors were added to many popular rides such as Rip Ride RockIt. Many folks are tweeting that this is extremely inconvenient and over the top. We have also skipped these rides during our last few visits too.. We simply didn’t want to take the extra time in lines to wait for a locker… even if they are free.
Walt Disney World has taken this protocol a step further. Not only did they ban selfie sticks, they have banned all adult costumes from being worn in their parks, even at Halloween parties. Last week a man was arrested after trying to enter Magic Kingdom with a handgun. After that incident, Disney pulled all toy guns from their gift shop shelves, including the wooden Pirates of the Caribbean replica guns and squirt guns! The sign below is now at the entrance of Walt Disney World parks.
The theater at Disney Springs also had new metal detectors last night for the debut of the new Star Wars movie. The safety precautions aren’t only happening in Orlando, they have extended out West as well. Disneyland and Universal Studios in Hollywood, California, are using the same devices.
What are your thoughts on these new security measures? Are you happy that metal detectors have been added to the parks? What about the individual queue-line metal detectors at Universal? Are those detectors causing you to skip the rides? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below or on our socials! We would love to hear your thoughts!
