La Joya Independent School District Opens First School-Owned Waterpark
La Joya Independent School District out of Texas has officially opened it’s Sports and Learning Complex. The highlight of the new property was the inclusion of a 90000 square foot waterpark! This is the first waterpark in the state to be owned by a school.
Over four years of planning and construction went into the water park project at an estimated cost of $20 million.
The park consists of 2 slide complexes, large splash pads, lap pools, and other features. At max capacity, the waterpark can house over 1200 people at once.
School officials were tremendously pleased with the opening.
“It’s very exciting. I think it’s a dream come true and it will provide a lot of opportunities for kids. Sometimes, this could be the only water park these kids get to see and there’s no price for that,” said La Joya ISD Superintendent Dr. Alda Benavides.
The 90,000 sq. ft. water park will not only be for La Joya ISD students and their community, but the entire Rio Grande Valley, as well. The water park will be open to the public every day, except on Wednesdays. Swimming lessons, private parties and aquatic programs aimed at safety and fitness will be available for the public.
Along with the waterpark, the complex will also contain an indoor natatorium, tennis courts, a golf course, planetarium, and a learning center. Check out the park in the grand opening video below.
The waterpark will open to the public beginning in the summer of 2018 as well as be available for private bookings and reservations. The summer season kicks off Memorial Day weekend and end the weekend before Labor Day. Operating hours are set for Sunday thru Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. with the exception of Wednesdays. This day will serve as maintenance, training and in-service day for staff. Additionally, Learn to Swim lessons will be offered daily before and after regular operating hours.
