Kings Island Kicks Cancer campaign raises $171,000.00!
Kings Island has been big on giving back to special causes since the park came into the Cedar Fair fold in 2006. The mission of making an impact to the community was further emphasized when the Mason, OH-based theme park presented two checks on Sunday, August 23rd to three charitable organizations as part of their Kings Island Kicks Cancer campaign. From July 24th through August 23rd, there were 22,590 soccer balls kicked into the International Street Fountain, which costs $5.00 each. A grand total of $171,000.00 was raised and donated with three $57,000.00 checks given to three different charities. The International Street Fountain has always been an icon among other park icons over the last 4 plus decades and this makes it’s use very special and meaningful.
While the fountain has been used for fun events, like ice-skating during the WinterFest years, the guest-involved charity promotions the park has run has been tremendous. Representatives from Melanoma Know More, Pink Ribbon Girls and The Dragonfly Foundation organizations were on hand on August 23rd to receive the charity check from Marissa Brock, Kings Island’s VP of Marketing. When guests spent $5.00 to kick their soccer ball in the fountain to help Kick Cancer, they were also entered to win a 2015 Honda Civic. [That’s especially awesome for those of us who drive to K.I. from an hour or more away]. The winner of the new wheels was a resident of Flint, Michigan; you read that right. Someone from Michigan actually won something in Ohio state! [Pardon, my sports fandom is showing].
Since Kings Island started hosting the cancer charity drives in 2010, they have raised over $1 million in care and research for the fight against cancers that affect men, women and children. Other promotions that garnered lots of guest participation include toys of Snoopy laying on a pink pool tube and pink ducks for the “Chuck Your Duck” campaign, which involved guests throwing their pink duckies in the fountain. It’ll be fun to see what charity events take place next year that engage guests to give to a great cause and have lots of fun doing it!
