The new 4-D experience fires on all cylinders engaging on five senses including touch and smell!

Kennywood is opening it’s new multimillion-dollar 4-D Theater on July 29, when visitors can watch the animated short film “Ice Age: No Time for Nuts 4-D.” During the 9-minute film, which plays on a continuing loop during park hours, guests will get a multi-sensory experience with special effects such as blasts of air, bubbles, and snowflakes, vibrating seats, a misting of water and even the smell of fresh pine. These sensory effects come along with 3-D effects, which visitors can see by wearing a pair of 3D glasses which are provided to each guest at no extra charge.

It will offer a refreshing escape for visitors”, says Kennywood Director of PR, Nick Paradise.

It will be good to let people get out of the weather… and escape the brutal heat and the rain we had earlier in the year,” he says. “We were looking for something to fill a gap.”

The 4-D Theater, which seats 88, is situated next to the Bayern Kurve, a bobsled ride on the side of the park that is next to Kennywood Boulevard. The old arcade building where park visitors previously played the laser beam break game was remodeled and given a new facade. Patrons will wait in line for the show as they do for any attraction, and exit the theater through a gift shop.

The “Ice Age” short film created by Blue Sky Studios and Fox Animation, in partnership with SimEx-lwerks Entertainment follows the high-strung squirrel Scrat on a time-travel adventure. While chasing his iconic acorn, Scrat experiences historical scenes and events from Excalibur to Ancient Rome to the Titanic.

We stopped by the day before opening and shot a quick video of the facade. It’s very nice!!

Paradise also mentioned that after summer ends, Kennywood will play other short films in the 4-D Theater, depending on the season.

During the Halloween themed “Phantom Fright Nights“, a short, 4-D version of “Friday the 13th” might play, and during “Kennywood Holiday Lights“, we could see a 4-D, short version of “The Polar Express.” Those are just ideas the park is tossing around at this point and not yet official.

Paradise continued by saying “We do have the potential to change and show anything we want over time, so I expect that we’ll be changing the movies fairly regularly. Right now, we’re really excited for ‘Ice Age ”.

Kennywood GM Jerome Gibbs was excited for the new attraction as well and said:

We are thrilled to bring this new Ice Age experience to our guests! The high action storyline engages all the senses with amazing scenes that maximize our in-theater special effects.”

The 4-D Theater will be open to guests July 29 and is included in the price of Kennywood’s FunDay Passes and Season Passes.

The 4D ride isn’t the only thing new at Kennywood for 2015. Earlier this year the park released Kennywood Crunch — a new black-and-gold flavor of Dippin’ Dots ice cream! Be sure to give it a try, it’s delicious!
