Hersheypark Planning Another New Attraction
Even though Hersheypark is entering the 2018 season with 2 epic new waterpark attractions, the future could be even sweeter if the park can obtain permission to move forward with their future plans.
According to the Dauphin County Board Of Commissioners Commissioners’ Legislative Meeting on November 15th 2017, Hersheypark notified the board through its engineering advising firm K&W, that it was applying for an Individual Permit Coverage through the Department of Environmental Protection for the “Hersheypark Entrance Improvements and 2020 Attraction”.
K&W is a civil engineering firm located near Hersheypark offering a variety of services, including work in permitting and regulatory agency approvals, civil engineering, site planning, and surveying.
In the following Dauphin County Board Of Commissioners Commissioners’ Legislative Meeting on November 29th 2017, Hersheypark’s original plans were elaborated on when the park and it’s advising firm (Vortex Environmental Inc) stated that the permit application was for “a water obstruction and encroachment permit for proposed stream channel and floodway impacts associated with the entrance area improvements and new ride attraction construction“.
The revealing statement indicates potential regions of possible construction. The mentioning of the stream channel indicates that the work will involve the regions of the park bordering Spring Creek.
The permit applications are following the completion of the new Park Boulevard road surrounding the southern edge of the park. In the Winter 2016 edition of the Derry Township 2016 Newsletter, it was stated that the new road would “allow Hersheypark to expand west to the old swimming pool and ballroom area to develop approximately 38 acres“. This expansion of land would be south of the current entrance.
It is unknown exactly what type of attraction will be included in the new expansion. The fact that the project includes floodway impact indicates that the construction site will be quite large. This expansion will conclude an epic decade for Hersheypark which included the addition of 3 roller coasters, unique set of drop towers, water park expansion, and a few other additions along the way.
The last new coaster Hershey opened was the indoor Laff Trakk wild mouse coaster in 2015, and before that SkyRush opened in 2012, Fahrenheit in 2008, and Storm Runner in 2004. They seem to average a new coaster every 3-4 seasons as of late, so 2020 is indeed possible for a new coaster.
Moving over to Racer Corner in The Boardwalk, construction is moving along great on Breakers Edge water coaster and Whitecap Racer that will be opening Memorial Day Weekend 2018! Everything looks so pretty and colorful! A few days ago, Hersheypark flew a drone over the construction site for the parks “100 days until opening” — check out the fly-over video!
