Exclusive Photos, Details, Construction Of Kings Island’s Beloved Mystic Timbers
The process of building a roller coaster is a drawn out process that usually takes several years. While the planning, alterations, and designing of the coaster happens in park offices, the most dramatic and recognized stages of the procedure is the physical construction. Generally the coasters are built while parks are closed, but more and more parks are starting to highlight this process by offering special behind the scenes photos, videos, and even on site construction tours. These tours often grant invited guests with a first hand experience in observing how a roller coaster is built.

The below series of images are from the construction of Kings Island’s Mystic Timbers in November of 2016. As seen in the photos, much of the supports and laminar boards beneath the track have been installed at this point. One of the photos shows the future site of the station and the shed prior to the first pieces of rebar being installed. The photos underscore the innovative design of Mystic Timbers, as the park managed to fit a queue, station, and “shed” inside of the small plot of land.

Mystic Timbers has been a favorite among park guests since it opened in 2017. The coaster takes riders up 109.2 feet in the air before sending them through the forest at speeds up to 53 MPH. After flying through 3,265 feet of track, riders encounter the “shed” which features a unique surprise at the end of every ride. The ride ignited the third golden age of the wooden coaster, pushing a boom in the construction of highly themed, immersive wooden coasters!

Below is a look back at the media day presentation led by Kings Island’s communication Director, Don Helbig. In the presentation we learn the complete back story about the ride and its themed elements. Ever wonder why a truck is crashed at the ride entrance? After watching the presentation, it’ll all make sense. This historic event also marks the first public appearance for Mike Koontz, the parks General Manager.
