Evolution of The Kings Monopoly Board Game aka Kings Island-Opoly

For many amusement park guests, souvenirs make up a valuable part of their experience. Kings Island has historically been known for their unique souvenirs. From replica Eiffel Tower statues to themed magnets, the park offers a wide variety of souvenirs. One of the most intriguing souvenirs is Kings Island-Opoly — a Kings Island themed edition of the classic Monopoly board game.

Throughout Kings Island’s history, there has been two park-specific releases of the game, while an additional limited edition Monopoly release also heavily featured the Ohio park.

The first Kings Island-Opoly was released at the tail end of the Paramount years as “Kings Island-Opoly: A Game Of Paramount Proportions”. Released at a time when amusement park themed monopoly games were extremely popular, this game featured the icons and attractions of “Paramount’s Kings Island“. The game was a massive hit among guests and even continued to be sold at the park after it was acquired by Cedar Fair in 2006. Although the item was still offered, it was discontinued shortly after the park started to shift away from the Paramount IPs.

The Paramount version of the game featured carousel horses, Eiffel Towers, and even ride vehicles as game pieces. Furthermore, the four railroad spaces in the original game were replaced by restaurants at the park. The Beast and Son of Beast represented the most valuable properties in the game.

In 2015, the city of Mason celebrated their bi-centennial. To celebrate the historic event, the city commissioned a limited edition Monopoly game featuring the landmarks of the city.

For this edition, Chance cards were replaced by Kings Island cards. Furthermore, both Great Wolf Lodge and Kings Island were featured as game pieces, as Wiley the Wolf and Eiffel Tower represented both companies respectively.

Fast forward to 2021, and now an entirely new version of the classic Kings Island-Opoly game has been introduced. The announcement was made by means of a detailed blog that highlighted the new game.

The game, now called “Kings Island-Opoly: A Game of Twisting, Twirling, Roller Coaster Fun” is described as: “Buy, Sell, and Trade your favorite Kings Island rides, restaurants, and attractions as you grow your very own amusement park empire with KINGS ISLAND-OPOLY”. It’s currently for sale at the park as well as on the park’s official online store!
