D23 2018 Announces Major Changes Coming to Disney Parks Worldwide
Over the weekend, D23 Expo Japan provided insights into future changes coming to Disney Parks. The event, held in celebration of the 35th anniversary of the Japan resort, included a plethora of announcements.
The presentations by Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Bob Chapek, started off by announcing Marvel Super Hero universe will come to Walt Disney Studios Park at Disneyland Paris.
Also, the Paris version of the Aerosmith Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster is completely getting re-imagined as an Avengers attraction. Riders will join up with Iron-Man and battle alongside in a high speed adventure! Soon as this was announced, fans were instantly speculating weather or not this will happen to the Orlando version.
Further changes are being made to the resort by means of a complete renovation of the Disney’s Hotel New York. Now, re-branded as “Disney’s Hotel New York – The Art of Marvel”, will showcase the world of the Marvel super-heroes. The re-imagined resort will open in 2020.
Over at the Hong Kong property, the Tomorrowland section will receive it’s second Marvel attraction. Coming off the success of the Iron-Man Experience, an entire Marvel-themed land is on its way for the resort. The former Buzz-Lightyear attraction will be receiving an Ant-Man overlay. Now guests will join Ant-Man and his battle against the evil forces of Arnim Zola and his swarm bots.
Also in Tomorrowland at Tokyo Disneyland, the first-ever attraction inspired by “Big Hero 6” will take guests on a ride around with Baymax. And that’s not all! The Fantasyland expansion in Tokyo will include an entirely new area themed to “Beauty and the Beast,” with an attraction set to the award-winning music fans know and love. A full-scale, live entertainment theaterwill also be added – a first for the park.
For the Florida parks, more details regarding the highly anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy themed attraction at EPCOT were revealed. The ride was once again CONFIRMED AS A COASTER! Designed to impress guests in an immersive experience, the ride will be one of the longest indoor roller coasters in the world when it opens in 2021 for the 50th anniversary of the resort.
Walt Disney Engineering is currently writing a unique story that will run concurrent with a an all new innovative ride system that will be “family-oriented”. But, don’t frown, just because it’s suitable for kids doesn’t mean it can’t be state-of-the-art! An opening date was still not announced.
“As we build upon its core mission of optimism and hope to inspire the world, the real will become fantastic and the fantastic will become real—in whole new ways at Epcot,” said Bob Chapek, Chairman of Walt Disney Parks & Resorts.
The new Guardians of the Galaxy attraction will replacing the former Universe of Energy / Ellen’s Energy Adventure in the park’s Future World area.
New details were released regarding Star Wars projects in Orlando. The highly-anticipated Star Wars-inspired resort planned for Walt Disney World is going to be unlike anything that exists today. The new revolutionary hotel will combine luxury with full immersion creating an authentic Star Wars story. The journey through space will start when everyone departs together for a multi-day Stars Wars adventure by boarding a starship with characters and stories that unfold all around them during a voyage through the galaxy.
The new resort will be seamlessly connected to the Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge expansion at Disney’s Hollywood Studios — completing the total Star Wars experience. An opening date for the Star Wars hotel has yet to be announced.
Bob wrapped up the Star Wars projects by sharing a sneak peek at the unique Toydarian merchandise guests will find exclusively in the land.
New concept art for for Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway were revealed at D23 Expo. The new ride will have a memorable song, stunning special effects, along with twists and turns for the whole family! The new attraction is planned to open in Summer of 2019 at Walt Disney World Hollywood Studios in Florida.
Finally, Disney’s California Adventure was covered. The presentation included information and concept art regarding the new Pixar Pier.
Guests will enter Pixar Pier through the new marquee, pictured above, which will be topped with the iconic Pixar lamp later this year. Details regarding the signature Incredicoaster (ex Californian Screamin) were scarce, as the only new piece of information was that the attraction would include character figures with lighting effects.
Pixar Pier will open June 23, 2018 at Disney California Adventure park featuring four whimsical neighborhoods representing beloved Pixar stories with newly themed attractions, foods and merchandise.
Guests will be able to celebrate their friendships at the all new Pixar Fest — bringing Pixar stories and characters to life like never before. At Disneyland, a new fireworks show, “Together Forever – A Pixar Nighttime Spectacular”, will debut with dazzling pyrotechnics, memorable music, and a heartwarming story.
A new float will be making its way to Disney’s California Adventure this June. It’ll be part of the popular “Paint the Night” parade featuring Mr. Incredible, Elastigirl and Frozone from The Incredibles. The new float will come to life using dazzling LED lights, new music elements, and high-tech pop-art effects inspired by the mid-century-modern style of the films.
