Abandoned Amusement Park Has Burned Down
Spreepark; the creepy closed amusement park in Berlin that was purchased by the government earlier this year, has burned. The fire destroyed large portions of the remaining buildings and scenery at the abandoned park.
On August 11th, firemen spotted flames from a distance and called in back-up shortly after 1am.
Reports indicated that firefighters discovered two blazes 200 meters apart that soon merged. This indicates the fires may have been arson.
Firemen had difficulty battling the blaze in the remote area, as the nearest water hydrants were located 1.5 kilometers away.
Emergency services said “Due to the very difficult water supply situation several police and fire service multipurpose boats were alerted,”
Police and fire service boats were sent in to help the emergency crews by pumping water in from the nearby Spree river.
The facades and buildings of a fake Western-style town were completely destroyed in the blaze, which the fire service said they had put out by approximately 4.30am.
The amusement park originally opened as “Kulturpark” in the late 1960s in what was then East Berlin. In 1989, after reunification, the park was revamped as Spreepark. Spreepark officially closed in 2002 after the owners went bust and left the country.
As the park got increasingly popular with trespassers and urban explorers, owners stepped up security and set up official paid tours on select weekends. Below, tourists ride the park’s train.
The dilapidated park was put up for sale earlier this spring and then taken over by the city. Many hoped it would be restored to it’s former glory, but after the fire, much of the park may not be able to be salvaged, if any of it at all…
Police are treating the fire as arson and have launched a full investigation. We will provide an update as soon as an official report is released.
