Cedar Fair Parks Announce Attractions for 2016!

Cedar Fair Logo II

Cedar Fair has been on a roll this week with a slew of announcements from numerous parks throughout their portfolio. On Wednesday, August 19th, Kings Island unveiled Tropical Plunge, the 65-foot complex of six different water slides, that will be nearly seven stories tall. It’ll debut in the park’s Soak City section, as well as new toll plazas in the parking lots, in 2016.

While we’re still waiting for Cedar Point to announce their 2016 attraction, due to being postponed, there are other park announcements happening and pending this month. One that’s highly anticipated is from Carowinds, with their Water You Doin’ 2016 campaign that will lead to the park’s “The Big Splash Press Conference” on August 27th.

On August 20th, Kings Dominion and Canada’s Wonderland both revealed the new attractions that’ll be coming to their respective parks. Both parks will see welcomed excitement from guests when the new thrills open in the coming year; let’s have a closer look at the coming attractions!

 Kimgs Island Delirium

Kings Dominion in Doswell, VA will be getting a nice dose of Delirium in the Candy Apple Grove section of the park, when the wild spinning pendulum ride opens next Spring. The giant frisbee is going in the same space where Shockwave thrilled guests for nearly 40 years. Delirium will be able to seat 40 guests at one time and have them facing outward (better for those that could up-chuck) on the ginormous ring. The ride will slowly start moving forward and backwards while starting to rotate; after quickly picking up speed, guests will be 115 feet up in the air with an arc angle of 120 degrees!! For Cedar Fair guests that are feeling some Deja Vu with this ride, that’s because there’s also a Delirium ride that’s been at Kings Island since 2003, which was manufactured by Huss and is located in the Action Zone section. This is going to be a welcome sight for guests and should fetch great ridership numbers. This style of ride has the capacity to engage a large number of guests at once and provides for an upgrade with the ride options. Construction will start this fall but to see what the ride is like at Kings Island, have a look for yourself in the video below!

Then, we have Canada’s Wonderland, eh? Our neighbors to the north have a new couple of new fangled rides coming next year. When the park opens for it’s 35th season, they will give fans Flying Eagles and Skyhawk. The Flying Eagles is a family friendly ride that can accommodate two people per plane and the two sided eagle face can be turned to shift the wind as the ride is flying 28 feet in the air. This is another ride that Cedar Fair freaks would recall, as this concept was debuted in 2015 at Kings Island and Cedar Point unveiled the Lake Erie Eagles in 2014 with a phenomenal light package on the ride at night. Having that element of fun as entry level to thrill rides for kids and families will be exceptional at the park.

“We are always looking to enhance the guest experience with new and exciting attractions. With the introduction of Skyhawk and Flying Eagles, thrill-seekers of all ages will enjoy the flying sensation on these interactive rides that are truly unique to our Park”.  –Norm Pirtovshek, General Manager of Canada’s Wonderland

The second attraction that’s coming to the fold is the Skyhawk ride. This will put riders in the pilot’s seat and they’ll be able to control their own cockpit while keeping control through 360 degree turns and have the ability to do multiple inversions at 135 feet in the air! I know it’s like Groundhog day, but we’ll address this possible 3rd instance of Cedar Fair Deja’ Vu again. The Skyhawk coming to Canada’s Wonderland shouldn’t be confused with Cedar Point’s Skyhawk, which is a giant swing ride that is much different than the new one coming to The Wonderland. Adding these rides will keep the park on par with what some of it’s sister parks have in it’s fold currently. While Cedar Fair didn’t release the cost of these 2016 additions, you get the sense that something big could come in 2017.

With that said, you might feel as though something is missing from the two park’s announcements: no dark ride! We told you in a recent article about Cedar Fair’s history of dark rides and their desire to have more added in the coming years. While all park announcements for the 2016 new attractions aren’t done yet, there’s a feeling that at least one park could get a dark ride next year. Dorney Park is due for something big.. maybe it’s them!!/?

With the high marks that were received for Knott’s Berry Farm’s Voyage To The Iron Reef, that could lead to Cedar Fair putting things in the works for a new dark ride to be unveiled in the next year or so.

Nonetheless, we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for Carowinds’ announcement this week on August 27th and Cedar Point’s unveiling soon for more high flying and record-breaking thrills. Something to get excited about with Cedar Point, is that they’ve moved their Coaster Timeline wall and there have been reports of track being transported to the park!
