Silver Dollar City Donates Iconic Fire in the Hole Ride Vehicle
Silver Dollar City’s original thrill ride, Fire in the Hole, has left an indelible mark on the amusement industry. First introduced in 1972, this unique, self-powered wooden coaster vehicle brought Ozark folklore to life for more than five decades. With the ride set to be replaced for the 2025 season, Silver Dollar City has donated one of its classic vehicles to the National Roller Coaster Museum and Archives (NRCMA).

“This is a really unique addition to the collection,” said NRCMA Historian Richard Munch. “Silver Dollar City invented this attraction in 1972, and these are handmade, wooden vehicles that are self-powered. Other than Blazing Fury at Dollywood, there are few examples of a ride vehicle like this. It will have an honored place in our collection.”
Fire in the Hole captivated visitors with a story-driven experience centered on a town near Marvel Cave, which falls victim to the antics of a vigilante group known as the Baldknobbers. Featuring memorable music and lines echoed back by park guests, the ride stood as a testament to Silver Dollar City’s commitment to storytelling and tradition.

With this donation, the NRCMA continues its mission to preserve the history of the amusement industry. Despite ongoing construction at the museum’s facility in Plainview, Texas, the museum remains focused on expanding its collection through the generosity of industry supporters, fans, and facilities. Those interested in contributing can donate at rollercoastermuseum.org or by mailing NRCMA at P.O. Box 5424, Arlington, Texas 76005.

The National Roller Coaster Museum & Archives is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to safeguarding historic roller coasters and amusement park artifacts.
