Universal Horror Unleashed Expands to Chicago

Universal is bringing spine-tingling scares and next-level storytelling to the Windy City. Universal Destinations & Experiences has officially announced Chicago as the next city to host Universal Horror Unleashed — a year-round, immersive horror attraction.

The new location marks Universal’s first branded entertainment experience in the Midwest and will occupy the former 114,000-square-foot Tribune Distribution Center at 700 W. Chicago Avenue, nestled between the River North and West Town neighborhoods. Conveniently situated across from the future Bally’s Casino, the venue promises a chilling addition to Chicago’s already-thriving entertainment scene.

“Universal Horror Unleashed delivers on our promise to create highly immersive and terrifying horror experiences that connect with fans year-round,” said Page Thompson, President of New Ventures at Universal Destinations & Experiences. “We’re excited to bring this bold concept to life in Chicago, a city known for its vibrant culture. We’re grateful for the city’s support as we convert this dormant site into a unique attraction that showcases our storytelling expertise and ability to deliver mind-blowing experiences that shatter guest expectations.”

The Chicago venue is Universal’s second Horror Unleashed location, following the debut of the Las Vegas version, which opens August 14, 2025. The new attraction will feature terrifying mazes, immersive environments, themed bars with signature craft cocktails, horror-inspired bites, and a retail shop stocked with exclusive collectibles and merchandise.

Expanding the Universal Horror Unleashed brand is a key part of the company’s broader strategy to introduce original, year-round entertainment experiences to new markets beyond its traditional theme parks. Chicago was selected for its large population base and its reputation as a top-tier destination for both tourism and entertainment.

Construction on the Chicago location is expected to begin in early 2026 after the finalization of designs and permitting. The Chicago attraction is currently set to open in 2027.

This announcement continues a wave of major developments from Universal Destinations & Experiences. In addition to Universal Horror Unleashed Las Vegas, other forthcoming projects include the opening of Universal Epic Universe in Orlando, the 2026 debut of Universal Kids Resort in Frisco, Texas, and plans for a brand-new theme park and resort in the United Kingdom, slated to open in 2031 — Universal’s first park in Europe.
