SeaWorld San Diego Cancels 2021 Coaster Project

In 2019, thrill seekers were abuzz with the activity of SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment. Many of their parks were scheduled to receive large coasters in back to back years.

One of the parks scheduled to receive coasters in 2020 and 2021 was SeaWorld San Diego. The park was set to receive a second-gen B&M Dive Coaster (Emperor) in 2020, followed by the Wild Arctic replacement in 2021. The replacement for Wild Arctic would have been a ride similar to Wave Breaker at SeaWorld San Antonio. The new coaster would have used most of the old Wild Arctic attraction building while guests would have been launched out of the building through a series of intense banked turns. All told, the ride would feature four launches and have a maximum height of 30 feet.

Permits were filed in early 2020 for the new ride. Eleven permits for the 2021 project with the City of San Diego’s Development Services Department. The scope of the project was:

MISSION BAY PARK; Building, Mechanical, Electrical&Plumbing Permits for a new coaster ride at an existing theme park. Work to include ride foundation; remodel of a 2-Level station (Bldg 10) with lockers, gift shop, janitor room, restroom, storage, offices and maintenance rooms; remodel of a ride queue (Bldg 30) and the addition of a new electrical support building (Bldg 20); 8′-0″H and 12′-0″H fencing. RS-1-7 / RM-4-10; N-APP-1; 1ST PBL-RDWY; ESL’s; Geo Haz 31

The permits indicate the project was cancelled on March 18th, 2020 – shortly after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is unknown why the project was cancelled, but if it was due to the pandemic, it would have been the first park project to get canned due to the pandemic.

The 2020 project, Emperor, is anticipated to open in 2021. The ride is the first second generation dive coaster in the United States. Featuring unique six passenger cars, the ride will take riders through a terrifying 90 degree plunge and flip riders upside down three times.
