Kennywood’s Log Jammer Ride Permanently Closing
The summer season is winding down at Kennywood and today, the park announced that Log Jammer will retire at the end of the 2017 season. After 42 years of operation, the log flume ride will permanently close on September 17. The park is inviting fans of the ride to enjoy one last drop down the 53-foot drop chute before the season ends.
Log Jammer originally debuted in 1975 as Kennywood’s first million-dollar attraction. Maintaining a 42 year old ride takes a lot of time, funds, and effort. To keep the ride operating, it would need a major overhaul. With low ridership, it’s no surprise its being removed. Though the ride is nostalgic for many Kennywood guests over the years, we look forward to the future of that area in the park.
“While no final decisions have been made regarding what will replace the Log Jammer, Kennywood is committed to enhancing our guests’ experiences while preserving our signature balance of modern thrills and traditional family favorites” said Kennywood General Manager Jerome Gibas.
This area of the park was once home to attractions such as the Whip, Loop-O-Plane, Kangaroo, Bubble Bounce, and even a pony track. And for everyone who’s spent summers splashing down that spillway drop, memories of the Log Jammer will stay forever in our hearts.
After the park announced the rides final drop, fans took to social media to express their thoughts. Although many were happy for a new attraction, some were… well, not so happy… Someone even started a petition to try to save the ride. Jeff, a Kennywood superfan, tweeted that this was the greatest tragedy since the Harambe incident.
So what’s replacing the 42 year old Log Jammer? Nothing is official yet, but long time rumors and leaked blueprints point toward a new roller coaster that would take advantage of the hilly terrain. Over the past few months we have seen reps from a few coaster manufactures visiting the park, so a new coaster seems very promising :)
