Dorney Park’s Thunderhawk Coaster Celebrates 100 years in 2024

Riding a roller coaster that’s a hundred years old is a rare opportunity. However, in 2024, roller coaster enthusiasts can seize that chance as Dorney Park commemorates the 100th anniversary of Thunderhawk.

Constructed at Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom in 1924 by Philadelphia Toboggan Coasters, Inc. (PTC), Thunderhawk holds the distinction of being the oldest operating coaster under Cedar Fair, Dorney Park’s parent company, and also one of the oldest operating coasters in the world.

Thunderhawk, originally named “The Coaster”, was situated along an existing trolley line with a basic out-and-back design. In 1930, the ride underwent a re-design, led by PTC and Herbert P. Schmeck, its original designer. Together, they came up with a newer, faster, and more curvy layout traveling into the picnic area while crossing the trolley tracks twice.

During the off-season, amusement parks in colder climates frequently dismantle entire roller coaster trains for essential maintenance. Given the proximity of Philadelphia Toboggan Company to Dorney Park, the coaster was transported there for preparation ahead of its 100th anniversary.
