Disney Bans Phones And Cameras on Space Mountain at Magic Kingdom

Disney parks have always been very relaxed with on-board item policies, allowing guests to take loose articles on rides, and even record their experience with phones — but that is all about to change.

New signage has been put in place at Walt Disney World banning loose articles while riding Space Mountain. Any handheld items, loose articles, as well as as phones and cameras are now required to be stored during the duration of the ride, in either a bag or the pouch attached to the ride vehicle.

Signage has also been placed inside the the ride queue.

Recording on the ride does not seem to be the main cause for concern here, but rather the safety of the guests riding the coaster.

While it feels like the Space Mountain ride vehicles travel at high speeds, they actually top out at 27-28 mph. The feeling of hyper-speed is created by effects including neon lighting, creative sound, and of course dark surroundings that keep you uncertain of where you are on the ride. Multiple ride vehicles travel at once along the multi-level track with riders constantly above and below each other — so it’s easy to understand how dropping a loose article could potentially harm someone else on the attraction.

The restriction is speculated to be the first of many to be rolled out across the faster-paced attractions at Disney parks. We expect this same policy to be in place for the upcoming TRON themed roller coaster opening Spring of 2023. This is in line with the “no-loose articles” rules implemented at other parks such as Universal, Cedar Fair, Six Flags and more.
