Columbus Zoo and Aquarium Welcomes Conservation Leader Dr. Kathayoon Khalil
The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium has introduced Dr. Kathayoon Khalil as its new Vice President and Director of Conservation Programs for the Zoo and The Wilds. Bringing over two decades of expertise in environmental education, conservation strategy, and program evaluation, Dr. Khalil officially stepped into her new role on January 22, 2025.

In her position, Dr. Khalil will oversee all conservation initiatives for both the Zoo and The Wilds, a 10,000-acre conservation center and safari park in southeastern Ohio. Her work will focus on enhancing collaborative partnerships and advancing cutting-edge conservation science to further the organization’s mission of “Empowering People. Saving Wildlife.”
“Dr. Khalil brings a wealth of experience, passion, and a track record of impactful conservation work,” said Dr. Jan Ramer, Senior Vice President of Animal Care and Conservation for the Columbus Zoo and The Wilds. “Her leadership will elevate our efforts to connect people with nature and inspire meaningful conservation action both locally and globally.”

Before joining the Columbus Zoo, Dr. Khalil served as Associate Vice President at the New England Aquarium, where she spearheaded initiatives such as a community needs assessment, the creation of the Aquarium’s first Youth Advisory Council, and the development of strategic education programs. She also held key positions as Conservation Impact Manager at the Oregon Zoo and Director of Engagement at Canopy Strategic Partners, further showcasing her commitment to conservation and community engagement.
Dr. Khalil’s academic achievements include a Ph.D. in Education, Learning Sciences, and Technology Design from Stanford University and a Master of Environmental Science from Yale University. Her work as an adjunct professor with Miami University’s Project Dragonfly program allowed her to lead immersive courses in conservation science and biodiversity, often set in diverse ecosystems worldwide.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Dr. Khalil is a published co-author, contributing research on topics that intersect empathy, community learning, and environmental action. Her approach consistently integrates conservation with principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility, creating programs that inspire transformative environmental stewardship.
Reflecting on her new role, Dr. Khalil said, “I am incredibly honored to join the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and The Wilds, which are recognized worldwide for their leadership in wildlife conservation. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, home to more than 10,000 animals representing over 600 species, is widely regarded as a global leader in conservation. In addition to its renowned Zoo, the complex features the 22-acre Zoombezi Bay water park and the Safari Golf Club.
